Protesters torch Government vehicle on MA road

Police in Kashmir’s main city on Tuesday fired tear-gas shells to disperse hundreds of demonstrators who took to streets to protest over a US-made anti-Islam video, witnesses said.

They said the angry protesters set fire to a government vehicle and threw rocks at police who stopped them from marching to Lalchowk area in the heart of capital Srinagar.

The procession had started from old parts of the city and marched through roads leading to the civil lines area, largely peaceful, before police stopped them near Poloview and asked them to move back towards the old city instead.

As angry youth tried to defy the police guard, teargas shells were fired and the protestors baton charged.

“God is Greatest” and “There is no God but God,” the protesters chanted. They also chanted slogans against America and Israel.

Spontaneous protests have erupted across the Valley against the film which shows the prophet of Islam in poor light.

Protestors shouted pro-Islam and anti-US slogans in north Kashmir’s Baramulla town and also in south Kashmir’s Pampore town.

Protests against the anti-Islam video were also reported from the north Kashmir Kangan town in Ganderbal district.

Religious groups, various separatist leaders, traders and lawyers had called for the shutdown today
