Sanaullah Dies, Chief Minister Apologises To Family

Pakistani prisoner Sanaullah Haq, who was in Chandigarh hospital after being attacked in Kotbalwal jail Jammu last week, died on Thursday morning.

“Sanaullah was declared dead around 7 am due to multiple organ failure. The team of doctors headed by YK Batra tried their best to revive him,” a spokesperson of the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) said.

The body has been shifted to the mortuary of the Institute from the ICU in the Advanced Trauma Centre.

Pakistan High Commission spokesman Manzoor Memon said in New Delhi that Pakistan was “in grief and shock” at the death of Sanaullah.

“We will request the Indian government to facilitate return of his body to Pakistan,” Memon told a news agency.

The PGI spokesman said that it was a case of death in custody and a post-mortem will be conducted for which a medical board is being constituted.

“The post-mortem will be conducted by the Medical Board in the presence of a Magistrate and videography will be done of the process,” he said.

When asked about handing over of the body to the two relatives of Sanuallah, the spokesman said that it was for the Chandigarh administration and the Union Home Ministry to decide.

“The PGI will act on handing over of the body as per the instructions of the government,” the spokesman said.
Sanaullah had suffered renal failure on Wednesday and his condition was “extremely critical”.

“He was put on peritoneal dialysis by Nephrologists. He had developed hypothermia,” a medical bulletin issued by the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) here had said last evening.

Sanaullah had developed jaundice and other internal infections on Tuesday, doctors said.

Two members of Sanaullah’s family had arrived here on Tuesday from Pakistan.

A resident of Sialkot in Pakistan, Sanuallah was serving a life term at Jammu’s Kot Bhalwal Jail after he was convicted under TADA provisions. Ranjay was arrested in 1996 and charged with involvement in a bomb blast at Katra.

The attack on Sanaullah took place a day after Sarabjit Singh, an Indian prisoner in Pakistan, succumbed to grievous injuries following an assault in Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat Jail.

Meanwhile Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has offered “sincere apology” to the family of Sanaullah Haq, the Pakistani prisoner who succumbed to injuries in PGI Chandigarh this morning.

“Although it’s scant consolation I’d like to offer a sincere apology to the family of Sanaullah Haq & my sympathies for their loss. While the inquiry will fix responsibility for any dereliction of duty the fact that this happening at all is a matter of great regret” he wrote on Twitter soon after his Sanaullah was declared dead.
