Protest Against Power Tariff Hike in Kashmir

Hundreds of vehicles, including those carrying tourists, were stranded on famous Mughal garden Nishat road on the bank of Dal Lake, where people were protesting against the hike in power tariff by the Power Development Department (PDD).

Raising slogans against the government and PDD, the agitators blocked the main road near the garden and did not even allow security force and school vehicles.

They alleged that the government has increased power traffic several times during the past few years when the supply position has infact worsened.

The electricity bills issued by the PDD were in fact several times more against the actual power consumption, the agitators alleged and said there are unscheduled power cuts.

Recently, the PDD had to issue revised electric bills after people protested against charging them more in different parts of the city and other parts of the valley.

Reports of demonstration against frequent power failure, low voltage and increase in power traffic were also received from other parts of the valley.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had yesterday justified increase in the power traffic, claiming that government was supplying power to consumers at cheapest rate in the country, next to Sikkim.

He said that government was purchasing power on higher rates and supplying to consumers on huge subsidy.
However, the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDD) and other opposition parties, including State Unit of the Communist Party of India (M), have criticised the coalition government for increase in the power tariff.

Demanding immediate roll back of increase in the tariff, the opposition parties alleged that people are facing acute power problem despite increase in the tariff more than six times since this government assumed office in the state.
