Fresh Snowfall in Upper Reaches of Kashmir

Fresh snowfall was experienced in upper reaches of the Kashmir valley, including world famous ski resort of Gulmarg, while in Srinagar and other plains sky remained cloudy.

A Met department spokesman said here this afternoon that light rain or thundershowers would occur at isolated places in the Kashmir valley during the next 24 hours.

However, the weather will remain mainly dry in Jammu and Ladakh regions. Gulmarg, a famed ski resort in north Kashmir, received fresh snowfall and hailstorm this afternoon, manager of a hotel Zaffar said.

He said it was cloudy since morning. However, this afternoon it snowfall and hailstorm started, much to the delight of tourists and skiers, who had come from different states of the country, where the temperature had increased.

Mr Zaffar said in the upper reaches, including Kongdori, Khilanmarg and Affarwat, the highest skiing point connected by Cable Car, received light to moderate snowfall.

Trees and open spaces had turned white due to fresh snowfall. A Met department spokesman said the minimum temperature at Gulmarg was recorded at 3.4 degree, a notch below normal.

The other heights in north Kashmir, including areas near the Line of Control (LoC), also experienced fresh snowfall.

In upper reaches, including Sheshnag, Panjterni and Mahaguns there was fresh snowfall.

The Holy Amarnath cave shrine and its periphery also received fresh snowfall. At Pahalgam the minimum temperature was 6.1 degree, two degrees above normal.

However, it was a notch less than yesterday when it was 7.1 degree. Barring Kupwara, the night temperature was below normal elsewhere in the valley. At summer capital, Srinagar, the sky will be cloudy tomorrow, Met spokesman said adding that the minimum temperature was 8.8 degree, about a notch below normal.
