Suspected militants fired at assistant sub-inspector Farooq Ahmed while he was on duty at Main Chowk, Pulwama at around 2 pm.
The gunmen fled the spot, a police officer told Freepress.
He said the police have launched a manhunt for the attackers.
This is the second attack on policemen in Kashmir in fifteen days.
On April 27, militants shot dead four policemen in Hygam area of Sopore in Baramulla district of north Kashmir.
