Ladakh Highway Reopens, More Snowfall Predicted

The national highway, connecting the Ladakh region with the rest of Jammu and Kashmir, was put through after remaining closed for two days due to landslides, triggered by fresh snowfall.

However, a Met department spokesperson said moderate to heavy snowfall is likely from Zojila to Drass, the second coldest place in the world after Siberia, on the highway in the next 24 hrs.

A traffic police official said traffic from both sides was allowed today. Official sources said all vehicles, stranded on both sides of the Zojila were allowed to move towards their respective destinations till last evening.

Traffic movement on 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh national highway was suspended on April 22 due to fresh snowfall at Sonmarg, Zojila pass and Drass.

There were landslides at several places on the highway forcing authorities to suspend traffic from Srinagar or Drass. However, traffic from Leh to Drass was plying normally during all these days.

He said Border Roads Organisation (BRO) responsible for the maintenance of the highway, pressed into service sophisticated machines and men and put through the highway again. The highway was reopened only on April 6 after remaining closed since December last year due to snowfall.
