Power scenario has finally witnessed some improvement for the past 24 hours in the Kashmir valley after separatist and mainstream parties, cutting across party lines, criticised the government.
In the past 24 hours, there was less power curtailment in Srinagar and other major towns in the valley.
The improvement was possible after the government decided to import more power from other states, official sources told the United News of India.
Reports about power situation in the villages and other far off places was not available.
Protests were witnessed against major power failure in the Kashmir valley, including summer capital Srinagar, for the past three weeks.
Metered and non-metered areas in Srinagar and other parts of the Kashmir valley witnessed major power cuts for 10 hours to 12 hours daily for the past three weeks, evoking massive protests by people.
People said the power situation was far more better in winter, including Chalai-e-Kalan, the coldest period, in the Kashmir valley.
“However, with the onset of summer, when the local generation also witnesses improvement due to increase
in the water level in Jehlum and other rivers, the Power Development Department (PDD) has resorted to unscheduled major power cuts,” they said.
Metered areas, which were getting more than 18 hours power, were getting just eight to ten hours power while situation was worse in non metered areas forcing people to took to streets.
People in most far flung and remote areas alleged that they were getting just two to three hours power daily while in some villages power remained off for weeks together.
The mainstream parties, including opposition Peoples Democratic Pary (PDP), Communist Party of India (M) besides some leaders of ruling alliance Congress and National Conference (NC) also criticised the PDD and government for failing to provide power supply to people.
Both the factions of the Hurriyat Conference also took up the issue of power failure in the valley.
Moderate Hurriyat chairman Mirwaiz Moulvi Omar Farooq urged that a united fight should be launched to get back the power projects of the state from NHPC.
