Mirwaiz released after 45 days

Authorities on late Wednesday night lifted the siege around the Nageen residence of Hurriyat Conference (M) Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq.

The siege was lifted soon after Mirwaiz filed a petition in the High Court to challenge his illegal house detention. Mirwaiz was first placed under house detention in New Delhi on February 9, when Muhammad Afzal Guru was hanged in Tihar Jail. After Mirwaiz arrived in the Valley he was again detained within his house.

Mirwaiz remained under house detention for nearly 45-days.

Talking to Greater Kashmir Mirwaiz said: “Seige around my residence was lifted on late Wednesday evening. We demand other leaders Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Muhammad Yain Malik should also be released from house detention.”

Mirwaiz demanded that other separatist leaders who were arrested after Afzal’s hanging should also be
released.
