India and Pakistan armies exchanged fire on Kashmir border on Sunday night, officials say, hours before the ninth anniversary of the truce agreement between two countries.
They say Pakistan troops targeted 10 Indian forward posts by firing over 6000 rounds from heavy weaponry along the border in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir state.
“Pakistan troops opened heavy fire with Medium Machine Guns and Heavy Machine Guns on 10 Indian forward posts along LoC in Krishnagati sub-sector of Poonch district last night,” PRO, Defence, S N Acharya said today.
The firing late on Sunday, which Acharya said was the heaviest this year, came just ahead of the anniversary of an Indo-Pak ceasefire agreement signed on November 26, 2003.
“They fired over 6000 rounds of MMGs and HMGs from 1940 hours to 2345 hours,” he said.
Army troops guarding the border line retaliated, resulting in exchanges.
However, there has been no loss of life or damage to property in the firing, Acharya said, but added that a forest fire was triggered along the Line of Control.
The fire has been doused.
