Curfew to continue in parts of Kashmir capital

Authorities have decided to continue the curfew in parts of the capital city for the third day on Friday.

The curfew was imposed in nine police station areas viz Nowhatta, M R Gunj, Safakadal, Khanyar, Rainwari, Nigeen, Lal Bazaar, Zadibal and Parimpora, to prevent clashes between sunni and shia muslims.

Sectarian clashes are rare in the valley of Kashmir, but there were a few incidents in downtown Srinagar on Wednesday.

Fridays are crucial for law and order in the region as people gather in large numbers for afternoon prayers.

A police spokesperson said the situation in the curfew-bound areas remained peaceful on Thursday.

However the Deputy Commissioner or district head of the administration in Srinagar, Baseer Khan told a local news agency KNS that the curfew would remain in force for fear of violence.
