Kashmiri players who boycotted their last Ranji match against Andhra Pradesh, have been allegedly forced to apologise for the action.
These players, who hail from the Valley, were threatened with dire consequences if they didn’t apologise, sources within the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA) was quoted by Hindustan Times as saying.
On Tuesday evening, the committee constituted by JKCA president Farooq Abdullah to look into the matter exacted a written apology from the players.
Alleging bias in the selection process, these players had boycotted the last match. As a result, the team had all players from the Jammu region for that match, which J&K lost by an innings and 15 runs.
‘Bias in selection’
The sources pointed out that these players had complained that the team was being picked by Mehboob Iqbal, convenor of the team, and none of the selectors were being taken into the confidence.
“The team is being selected just a day before the match without following any procedure. Players are being harassed, are often threatened that they would be dropped,” said a senior member of the side.
The players, after boycotting the game, had written a letter to the president, asking him to look into the matter.
In response, the president constituted a committee to look into the issue.
“The matter is being looked into by the president and inquiry committee. Being a chairman of the association, I never interfere in the selection process. The president will take the final call on the issue,” said Aslam Goni, JKCA chairman.
