Friday protests: Kashmir deploys extra police, imposes undeclared curfew

Fearing demonstrations after Friday prayers, authorities in Muslim-majority Kashmir valley deployed extra policemen and imposed restrictions to quell protests over an anti-Islam film that triggered anti-US protests across the Muslim world, police and witnesses said.
They said undeclared curfew-like restrictions were imposed in the old city areas of Srinagar following the intelligence reports that “massive protests are being planned.”
Similar restrictions were also imposed in Anantnag town in south Kashmir, which has witnessed protests against anti-Islam video made in the US, the sources said.
Police across the state has been put on high alert in view of the possibilities of protest demonstrations across Jammu and Kashmir state, an official spokesman said.
Senior separatist leader and chief of hard-line faction of All Parties Hurriyat Conference,  Syed Ali Shah Geelani has called for peaceful protests after Friday congregation prayers against the acts of blasphemy. He has also called for abstention of work for two minutes at 11 am.
“We have reports that protests are being planned in major townships of the state on Friday and accordingly security apparatus has been put in place”, a senior police officer was quoted by region’s leading newspaper, Greater Kashmir, as saying.
District police heads have been asked to contact local religious leaders so as to ensure that protests, if any, are peaceful.
“We do not want any untoward incident to take place so police have been asked to ensure maximum restrain in all the areas”, he added.
Authorities have also decided to close schools and colleges in Kashmir division as a precautionary measure, apprehending widespread protests against the anti-Islam video made in the US and blasphemous cartoons published in France.
An official of the divisional administration said all schools shall remain closed tomorrow as a precautionary measure.
Although there was no call for a strike today, markets have remained closed elsewhere in the Valley while the public transport remained off the roads.
